Axminster and Wiltons have a backing that is woven with the carpet, other carpets have a backing
that has fibres tufted into it these backings are used for cheap and expensive carpets.The stronger
the backing the harder it is for the tufts to pull out or snag although this is not a problem with cut
pile carpets as there are no loops.Alightweight backing will usually go on to have a foam or felt
backing the more expensive carpets will usually have a hessian backing added instead, these carpets
cost more not because the hessian is more expensive but because the carpet fibre or quality is
expensive and if they were to go on and have a foam or felt put on the back consumers would
think oh its a cheap foam carpet
